Prayers to Hear God’s Voice for Every Part of Your Daily Life

Introduction to Listening Prayer

I want to pray for you right now that you would hear God’s voice like never before. So, I’m going to pray for you, and then I want to take you through a type of prayer that enables me to hear God very clearly. That is called listening prayer.

In this particular prayer, you will need a book and a pen because we are actually going to sit down and listen to the voice of God. Whatever you hear, you will write it down. So, I am going to pray for you, and then we will enter into listening prayer.

This is very much happening live for me because I don’t have a script and I don’t know what the Lord will say, but I will write whatever He tells me because we are doing this together.

Opening Prayer and Opening Our Ears

Father, I thank You that You love us. Lord, You’ve called us together as part of the prayer project to be a prayer community—a community that hears Your voice, grows in faith, and is encouraged together. Lord, thank You for speaking to us right now. I thank You, Lord, for saying in Your word, “My sheep hear my voice. A stranger’s voice they won’t follow, but my sheep hear my voice.”

We are Your sheep, Lord. We are those who have decided to walk the path of Christ. Therefore, O Lord, I pray in the name of Jesus that your ears may be opened—open to Your voice, open to what You say. Speak and address any blockages in our mind and our heart.

The lie that says we cannot hear You, or You don’t speak—we take authority over that lie. In the name of Jesus Christ, we command it to go. It is not of the Lord, and we don’t believe it.

We believe in the truth of the word You spoke in John’s gospel, where You stated that Your sheep will listen to Your voice and the Holy Spirit will teach us all we need to know. Therefore, Lord, thank You for the opportunity we now have as we enter this season to listen to Your voice, be transformed, renewed, and changed. Empower us and enable us to walk in the life that You’ve called us to. Because You speak, give us listening ears.

In Jesus’ name, any demonic influence over our heart and mind that keeps it from being able to hear—that blocks our ability to receive—I take authority over it. I command it to go now in Jesus’ name. Leave. And Lord, we thank You; Your voice will be clear today in Jesus’ name.

How to Practice Listening Prayer

So now, if you have a notebook, a pen, or your phone to write this down, we are going to engage in listening prayer. We are going to engage with Jesus in a way that, if you can practice this on a daily basis, will set you up to hear God very clearly. This isn’t something that just happens overnight, but if we practice this, something changes.

Listening prayer is the art of sitting down quietly, asking God to speak to us, and then waiting and seeing what He says. It might be:

  • An inkling, an unction, or a picture in your mind
  • Words that go through your mind like God is talking to you directly

I want you to be aware of all these options as we engage in this moment.

Seeking Jesus Together

Now then, what I would like you all to do is close your eyes and bow your heads. I will do that too. We will ask Jesus to speak to us.

So Jesus, we know that You have something You want to say to us today. You know what You want us to do. Holy Spirit, would You speak to us right now? And as you hear Him, just write down what He tells you, what you feel.

I hope you have managed to jot down something. It is good if you have been receiving any words from God, but if you have not, that is alright as well. This is an art.

What you’re doing as we pray is learning to tune to the frequency of God’s voice. You’re tuning your heart to Him and sharpening your ears to be able to hear. The Lord is going to speak to you in many ways, and if you practice this, you’ll begin to hear God’s voice.

What the Lord Shared With Me

I want to share with you what the Lord said to me. This is for me, because in my life as a pastor and in everyday life, I have decisions to make, and some of them are very large and hard. I think some of you are in similar boats.

This is what He said to me:

“Anxiety is not from Me. You have believed the lie that over-analyzing and overthinking gives you the ability to be okay. I have not given you that ability. Instead, come to me frequently in joy and praise, sitting at my feet. Direction will become clear. Answers will reveal themselves. And it will be easy.”

This has been the theme for the year for me, and it continues—just the Lord sharing with me that I needed to be reminded my ability, or even knowing what to do, is not birthed from being smart or from overthinking. I tend to go there, thinking, “What am I going to do?”

He’s telling me that you don’t live there. It’s not going to serve you. It’s not going to unveil what to do. Instead, live in the place of being at the feet of Jesus, believing that what is to come, He’s already got it. He’s already solved it. That’s what I need to believe. Sit at His feet, and direction will be revealed. Answers will come because they’ll be birthed from connection and closeness to Jesus.

A Lesson From University

Can I share with you one last thought on this note, because I think this is really going to impact people? I remember in university I had so much to do in my third year. I had papers, classes, and tons of leadership positions. I felt overwhelmed because I had to do all of these papers, and I just thought that I was going to go and pray about this. Not to solve any of these things, just to know You, trusting You would have them all.

So, I went and I prayed. And I came back to write the paper. Somewhere around the middle of my work on this paper, I broke into tears. “Why is this so easy?” For me, it was the supernatural overflow of knowing that Jesus had it all. And I needed to be reminded of that today: He has it all, and it will be easy.

Conclusion and Call to Action

For you, God wants to cut through the noise of your life, and He wants to show you what to do. It’s going to be in that place of sitting at His feet and simply listening. Being with Jesus is your answer. That is where all the secrets of the universe, in a sense, are revealed: sitting at the feet of Jesus.

I pray for you today that out of all the things you could do going forward, you would cherish the time and the moments you have at His feet, because that is what you’ve been searching for your whole life.

God bless you. And I would also encourage you:
